About the seminar
A cross-disciplinary seminar on the interplay between artificial intelligence and physics.
Aims
AI heralds a profound change in every scientific discipline. Mathematics is already experiencing it head-on, and physics is now beginning to as well.
This is the right time to reflect together on how AI will transform the way we do physics — from theory to experiment — as well as publishing, hiring and training. These questions are many and pressing. It is important to address them as well as we can: for researchers, and even more so for students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers. A central theme is the good use of AI: using it in a way that keeps our role as researchers at the centre, and continues to maintain and develop it.
The seminar features talks on several aspects of this new era, in particular:
- Perspectives — overviews of how AI could transform the discipline, its practices and education; societal issues (sovereignty, energy consumption);
- Results — the physics content of new results obtained with AI, and how AI was used to obtain them;
- Methods — how to use AI in physics, for researchers, PhD candidates and students.
Format
Sessions can take different formats: a talk followed by an open discussion, a round table, a series of informal presentations, and others. They take place at the Laboratoire de Physique of the École normale supérieure – PSL in Paris (24 rue Lhomond, 75005 Paris), in room Conf. IV, and are open to everyone; students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers are particularly welcome. Slides and, when possible, recordings are made available under Resources.
